This highly collectible coffee carafe/jug and cover was crafted by gladding mcbean within a few years of purchasing catalina island pottery in 1937. Our coffee carafe is very similar to the catalina island version, ours with the cover inset with a loop handle.
It has the gladding mcbean logo, first appearing in 1934, and made in usa, both of which were in use in the thirties and early forties. This piece is in excellent condition. There are no chips, cracks, fleabites, crazing or flaking anywhere to be found. The rubber seal has a tight bond where the wooden handle is attached. Color is gladding mcbean's iconic turquoise blue, a very vivid turquoise color we have not adequately captured in our pictures.
Gladding, mcbean is a ceramics company located in lincoln, california. It is one of the oldest companies in california, a pioneer in ceramics technology, and a company which has "contributed immeasurably" to the state's industrialization. It is still in operation.
