Antique Antoine Gustave De Bruyn Fives Lille 1900s Barbotine Hand Painted Handsome Gentleman Frog Decorated Carafe. Majolica of Fives-Lille.

  

This is a rare and stunning glazed barbotine majolica carafe by de bruyn fives lille or the majolica of fives-lille by antoine gustave de bruyn. There is a detailed hand painted clothed frog wearing a fez on one side holding a red carafe and a tray with matching cups. The decoration is reed grass and lily pad leaves around the edge.

The inside is a rich glazed red. There are two hairline fractures around the rim.

I would suggest this piece be used for decoration and not daily use. It should not be cleaned in a dishwasher. Other than these two fractures it is in great condition for its age with chips to the rim or damage to the handle.

"De bruyn fives lille" or the "majolica of fives-lille" - the faïencerie of fives-lille opened its doors in 1864, headed by mr antoine gustave de bruyn. The end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th they produced colourful barbotine carafes. These carafes represented personages, popular stories, and floral styles. The faïencerie employed around 400 workers during this period. The first world war and the death of antoine gustave de bruyn resulted in a decline of the factory in 1916.

It regained a short lived popularity again in 1925. Diameter at widest: approx 12cm.
