Scandinavian influenced Carafe set 1960s Caithness Stroma design Domhnall O Broin

  

This design was recently featured on the front cover of homes & antiques magazine as an example of modernist decor. The design is stroma', an elegant peat coloured glass pitcher with matching six tumblers - designed by domhnall o'broin in 1962 for caithness, scotland. Before joining caithness, o'broin had worked at orrefors of sweden. And the design of this carafe reflects his love of scandinavian modernism. It's outline is geometric, functional and beautifully crafted glass making.

The glasses are light, and delicately created by hand. Whilst head designer at caithness he declared the glass making must be as good as the scandinavians. Domhnall o'broin was a glass technologist, and wanted to capture the hues of the scottish landscape in the glass he created. The design was produced in the 60s, and in production to the late 70s. Similar to 1950s designs for iittala and nuutajarvi notsjo, produced by kaj franck et al.

It is a hard to find seven piece set. Pitcher/2-pint jug is around 25cm tall, simple lines, lightly angled spout, low handle. It holds around 1.2 litres. Glasses are very thin (mould blown) and are 8.5cm tall.
